Dry eye treatment before surgery
Your recovery will be quicker if your eyes are healthy before surgery. You can try several treatment options if your doctor determines you have dry eye during your presurgical screening exam.
Doctors can treat dry eyes with the following:
● A physician prescribes an eye drop.
Your glands produce more tears when you use these solutions. Drops can also be used to reduce swelling of the eyelids or corneas by your doctor.
● Plugs for tear ducts.
Tears can be prevented from leaving your eyes with a tiny silicone stopper.
● Using warm compresses.
Your eyes are blocked by glands that prevent tears from flowing, and they can be opened again by heat and massage combined.
● Treatment with light
Your doctor can open your ducts even more, using tiny pulses of light.
Effectiveness comparable to LASIK
The LASIK procedure is a highly effective and safe way to correct refractive errors. When correcting nearsightedness, ReLEx SMILE produces a nearly identical level of visual acuity.

Issues with LASIK
In LASIK, a flap is made to access the middle layer of corneal tissue, which results in dry eyes. The flap creates a severance of nerves that stimulate tear production. Your body cannot recognize the need for tears when your eyes are dry after the procedure.
In the weeks following your surgery, it is possible that your nerves will not be able to signal tears while they heal. Unlike LASIK, Lasik SMILE does not create a flap, and it’s just a tiny incision that doesn’t even touch these nerves. After ReLEx SMILE, you may still experience tears.
Less Invasive
After creating a flap in the cornea’s outer layer, LASIK removes corneal tissue to correct your corneal shape. In SMILE, no flap is created; the correction is still the same. You are instead treated with a laser to remove a small piece of tissue inside your cornea. Lenticles are organic bits of material shaped like lenses, and a tiny incision is made to extract them.
Without the lenticule, the cornea will assume the shape of the underlying tissue. Vision is enhanced as a result of this reshaping. The risk of complications is reduced with a lower-impact surgery. The recovery time is also shortened!
Does SMILE Have Any Downsides?
The SMILE procedure may seem superior to LASIK at first glance. However, only nearsightedness can be corrected by SMILE. Astigmatism, nearsightedness, and farsightedness can all be corrected with LASIK.
The LASIK procedure can also correct high-order aberrations, which make dim light vision difficult. None of the others can be treated by SMILE.
