What is Oculoplastic Surgery?

The field of oculoplastic surgery focuses on treating conditions such as drooping eyelids, blocked tear ducts, orbital fractures, and tumors of the eye. In addition to having oculoplastic surgery for medical reasons, many people have it purely to improve their appearance.

Eyelid surgery is considered a non-invasive, outpatient procedure with minimal scarring and quick recovery. Many patients feel a boost in self-esteem after getting the procedure.

Eyelid Surgery

Surgery to improve the appearance of the eyelids is known as eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty). It is non-invasive surgery and is considered an outpatient procedure.

The area around your eyes can be improved with eyelid surgery, regardless of whether you wish to improve your appearance or are experiencing functional problems with them.

Eyelid surgery may be considered for a variety of reasons, including:

  • The upper eyelids appear or feel heavy or puffy.
  •  The upper eyelids of your eyes droop downward, possibly to the level of the lashes.
  • Your upper eyelids give the appearance that you are tired, aged, angry, or stressed.
  • The area below your eyes is puffy.
  • You suffer from dry eyes due to a malposition of your lower eyelids.
  • There is a problem with your vision (particularly peripheral vision).
  • Your forehead is chronically sore as a result of brow straining.
  • Excessive friction is causing your eyelid skin to become irritated.
  • Your eye makeup application surface area is limited.

If so, you have these symptoms; you are the right candidate for eyelid surgery.

FAQ

By performing blepharoplasty, excess fat and skin are removed around the eyes, and musculature is tightened to treat droopy eyelids, puffiness, and under-eye bags. Smoother, younger-looking eyes are created through this procedure, reflecting a natural appearance of refreshed and energized health.

Several types of eyelid surgery are available for treating various cosmetic problems caused by aging or genetics.

Upper Eyelid

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty eliminates excess skin, puffiness, or heaviness. To reduce tired eyes and vision obstructions caused by drooping skin, excess skin and fat deposits on the upper eyelids can be removed through eyelid surgery.

Lower Eyelid

Lower blepharoplasty improves the appearance of the under-eye area. The lower eyelid surgery procedure can treat drooping lower lids, excess skin, puffy bags under the eyes, and hollows under them.

According to the patient’s specific needs, blepharoplasty can be performed on either the upper or lower eyelids. When upper eyelid surgery is performed, skin and fat are removed from the eyelids. Incisions are made in the natural folds of the eyelids to conceal scarring.

In lower eyelid surgery, fat beneath the lower lids is removed, often appearing as bags and dark circles. Sometimes, it is possible to remove only fat without making a skin incision.

Soreness, swelling, and bruising are common side effects of eyelid surgery. Depending on how your procedure went and how fast you healed, it usually takes a few days to a week for these effects to fade. A week off from work is usually recommended for patients recovering from surgery. Rest and abstain from exercise for at least three weeks after surgery. All post-operative instructions and follow-up appointments must be closely adhered to by patients to promote optimal healing.

FAQ

For most patients, we recommend 3-5 sessions spaced one month apart. It is best to do the needling procedure before the weekend so that you can recover from the swelling and redness.

You may be tempted to buy your own microneedling device on Amazon or at a store. However, you need to keep in mind 2 important facts:

1. There is a risk of infection since you are making tiny holes in the skin. Your home is not equipped for sterile surgical procedures like medical offices.
2. The use of non-medical rollers and needling pens can lead to inconsistent results or ineffective treatments if they penetrate too deeply or too shallow. Our motorized microneedling pen is FDA-cleared as a medical device.

Yes it works very well on dark skin complexions as opposed to many skin smoothing lasers that can only work on lighter skin.

Before your treatment begins, your doctor will apply a topical anesthetic. It helps to numb the area and reduce any pain you might feel during the procedure. Microneedling typically takes 15 to 30 minutes to complete. During the procedure, patients usually feel a warm, scratchy sensation as the tool moves around their faces.

Microneedling Procedure

To perform the procedure, your doctor will use a tool that contains tiny needles, either a dermapen or a dermaroller.  Microneedling tools are sterilized and designed to be used only once. The procedure begins with your doctor creating tiny holes in the outermost layer of the skin by running the tool evenly across the skin.

The main effect of microneedling is to penetrate your skin with tiny needles, causing two main effects:

  1. Microscopic holes
  2. Temporary tunnels

By creating these small holes in your skin, collagen and elastin are boosted, and the channels and tunnels created by the needle paths allow topical treatments to penetrate more effectively, thus enhancing their effectiveness.

Microneedling benefits:

Prevents skin aging

Microneedling has been shown to increase skin thickness and increase collagen and elastin levels, helping to reverse some of the signs of aging. It can also reduce sunspots, wrinkles and help tighten sagging skin.

Reduces acne scars

Many patients have seen a reduction in acne scarring after several procedures. Microneedling also works great on darker skin tones and evens out the texture of your skin.

Enhanced skin treatment

Following a microneedling treatment, topical therapies can be applied to the skin through the channels left by the needles. For example, a vitamin C serum can boost skin collagen further, while platelet rich plasma (PRP) can improve skin elasticity.
