Cataract surgery costs in the UAE can vary depending on the clinic you visit. Often people wonder what the cost of cataract surgery around the world and whether getting your cataract surgery in the UAE is the best option. In most cases, cataract surgery removes the natural lens from your eye and replaces its replacement with an artificial lens. Normal eye lenses are transparent, but cataracts cause them to become cloudy, which affects your vision. If you are looking to know if you have a cataract, you should read our article, what is a cataract?

Ophthalmologists perform the procedure outpatient, so hospitalization is not required. Cataract surgery provides several benefits, and it is generally a safe procedure. Cataract surgery can improve vision and reduce light sensitivity, both of which are symptoms of cataracts. If a cataract hinders your daily activities, an eye surgeon may recommend cataract surgery.

Cataracts may require surgery when they interfere with other eye disorders. For instance, if a cataract makes it challenging to get a full eye examination from your eye doctor and monitor or treat other eye issues, such as macular degeneration, you may not get a full eye exam.

You have time to think about your options if you delay cataract surgery because, in most cases, it won’t harm your eye. It may be years before you need cataract surgery, or even never.

When Should I Do Cataract Surgery?

Before contemplating cataract surgery, it’s important to consider the following questions:

● Can you see well enough to perform your job and drive safely?
● When you watch television or read, do you have problems?
● Is cooking, shopping, yard work, climbing stairs, or taking medications challenging?
● Are you able to maintain your independence as a result of your vision problems?
● Are bright lights hard to see in?

What are the Steps in Cataract Surgery?

As part of the preparation process, you will undergo a painless ultrasound test to measure your eye’s size and shape a week before surgery. This phenomenon helps determine the appropriate type of artificial lens (intraocular lens, or IOL) for you.

As a result of cataract surgery, most patients are fitted with IOLs, which focus light on the back of their eyes to enhance their vision. The lens is not visible or felt and requires no maintenance since it becomes a permanent part of your eye.

Different types of IOLs are available with different features. The type of IOL that would be best for you and your lifestyle will be discussed with your eye doctor before the surgery. Unless you have a health insurance policy, some lenses may not be covered by your policy.

Plastic, acrylic, and silicone are the most common materials used for IOLs. Some IOLs block ultraviolet light, while others are rigid and require sutures to close the incision. The flexibility of many IOLs makes it possible to make a smaller incision with fewer or no stitches. The surgeon folds this lens over the natural lens and places it inside an empty capsule. When the IOL is placed inside the eye, it unfolds and fills the empty capsule.

What are the Types of Lenses for Cataract Surgery?

  • Fixed-focus mono-focal lenses have a single strength for distance vision. Wearing reading glasses may be necessary while reading.
  • Accommodating-focus mono-focal lenses have a single focusing strength but can adjust focus based on eye muscle movements for near or distant objects.
  • Multifocal lenses, you can see near, medium, and far, as with bifocals or progressive lenses.
  • Astigmatism correction (toric) lenses help correct vision for significant astigmatism. Before choosing an IOL that is right for you, discussing the benefits and risks with your eye surgeon is important.

How Long is the Surgery?

In most cases, the outpatient procedure takes about an hour or less. First, your doctor will administer eyedrops to dilate your pupil. You will likely receive local anesthetics and sedatives to numb the affected area. A sedative may keep you awake during surgery, but you may feel groggy.

Following surgery to remove the cloudy lens, clear artificial lenses are implanted. However, removing a cataract without implanting a lens is sometimes possible.

What is Phacoemulsification?

An ultrasound probe is used to break up the lens for removal during Phacoemulsification, a surgical technique used to remove cataracts. Your eye is incised with a tiny incision.
Through ultrasound waves, the cataract is broken up within the lens substance. Artificial lenses may be placed without removing the lens capsule (back of the lens). Closing the corneal incision may require stitches.
There is a smaller chance that extracapsular cataract extraction will be successful since it requires a larger incision. The doctor removes the cataractous lens material as well as the front capsule of the lens through this incision. It is necessary to leave the back capsule of the lens in place to rest the artificial lens on it. The procedure requires stitches and may require them if you suffer from certain eye complications.

A Phacoemulsification or extracapsular extraction procedure removes the cataract and implants the artificial lens in the empty lens capsule.

Immediately following cataract surgery, you will be able to see better.

After Surgery Care

A follow-up appointment with your eye doctor is typically scheduled after the surgery, a week later, and about a month later to monitor the healing process. You may experience mild discomfort and itching after surgery for a few days. Try not to rub and keep your eyes relaxed.

Upon surgery, your doctor may prescribe an eye patch or protective shield. and for a few days afterward, especially while sleeping, to aid recovery. Infection may be prevented, inflammation may be reduced, and eye pressure may be stabilized with eye drops. These medications may sometimes be injected into the eye during the surgery.

About eight weeks pass before the discomfort completely subsides.
