What is Hyperopia? Causes, Symptoms & Treatment Options

Millions of people worldwide suffer from hyperopia, also known as farsightedness. A hyperopic eye causes light rays to focus behind the retina instead of directly on it, resulting in blurry close-up vision. With Lasik eye surgery, hyperopia can be corrected quickly.

Laser surgery improves vision by reshaping the cornea, the clear front part of the eye, with a laser. An incision is made in the cornea, and tissue is removed from the underlying cornea using a laser. By reshaping the cornea, light is focused directly on the retina, improving vision.

Hyperopia can be successfully treated with Lasik eye surgery since it reshapes the cornea. Patients can return to their normal activities within a few days of the surgery.

The “reading test” can determine if you have hyperopia by holding a book 14 to 16 inches away from your face and reading it. You may have hyperopia if the text appears blurry or out of focus.

The best way to detect hyperopia or other refractive errors is to have a comprehensive eye exam with an optometrist or ophthalmologist.

When considering Lasik eye surgery for hyperopia, it’s crucial to choose an experienced and reputable surgeon. The best choice is a board-certified surgeon with a high Lasik surgery success rate.

You will be informed of any risks or potential complications during your initial consultation with the surgeon. To ensure that Lasik eye surgery is safe and appropriate for you, your medical history and any medications you take will be considered.

In preparation for surgery, anesthetic eye drops will be administered to numb the area, and a small device will be applied to hold your eye open. After a laser creates a thin flap in the cornea, the surgeon folds it back to expose the underlying tissue. After reshaping the cornea, hyperopia is corrected. It usually takes less than 30 minutes to complete the procedure.

You may experience mild discomfort, including dry eyes or a gritty sensation, a few days after the procedure. In the weeks following surgery, avoid rubbing your eyes or getting water in them to prevent infection and promote healing.

Within a few days after the procedure, most patients see a significant improvement in their vision, and many can return to work a week later. For a successful recovery, it is essential to follow your surgeon’s instructions carefully after surgery.

Lasik eye surgery can easily correct hyperopia or farsightedness, a common refractive error. Hyperopia can be diagnosed by a simple reading test if your vision is blurry at close range. Choosing a reputable and experienced surgeon and undergoing a comprehensive evaluation are necessary steps when choosing Lasik eye surgery. If you receive the right care and follow-up, it is possible to significantly improve your vision and quality of life after Lasik eye surgery.
